“Most wills ever written don’t actually work terribly well”
Making a will is one of the most important actions you will ever need to take. Your will sets out who you want to benefit from your estate and in what way you want them to benefit.
Shockingly, even though most of us know it is important to make a will, only around a third of us get around to making even the most basic provisions for our loved ones.
David Robertson, Director at Ancojada Group, suggests that for many people who have made their wills, those arrangements may not do what they set out to achieve. “Most wills ever written don’t actually work terribly well”, he explains, “Whilst arranging a basic will is certainly better than the fall-back alternative of the government prescribed intestacy rules, it will very possibly not provide for your beneficiaries in the way you had intended”.
“Most standard wills provide only the bare minimum of protection for your hard-earned assets. In many cases, your loved ones might stand to lose some, perhaps even all, of their inheritance through no fault of their own”, he continued.
Even with a standard will in place then, your beneficiary’s inheritance could be at significant risk in the event of either yourself or any of your beneficiaries getting divorced, re-married or even becoming insolvent or bankrupt.
Given how often these kinds of events happen in our increasingly complex society, (perhaps they have even happened already to people in your own family?), then it is easy to appreciate just how important it is to not only make a will, but make a will that you can rely on to fulfil your wishes….. come what may!
Expressing frustration at the general quality of most people’s will planning, Robertson continued, “The thing is, it is entirely possible to remedy all of the legacy issues that only having a standard will can create, it just needs careful planning”.
Ancojada Group is committed to improving the effectiveness of the estate planning of all of it’s clients, existing and new.
